The Great Herring Migration

The Merrimack River is home to many fascinating natural wonders, and right now one of the most spectacular – the annual herring migration run – is underway. Tens of thousands of herring and shad are pushing their way upriver from the ocean, seeking out their spawning grounds in freshwater. They have reached the Great Stone Dam in Lawrence, where many are waiting their turn to continue their upriver journey via a fish elevator that will carry them over the dam.
Join MRWC’s Matthew Cranney as he leads a 2-mile walk through the heart of this migration event. Along the way we’ll see the ways that fish and eels get over the dam, and see massive schools of herring and their predators – scores of striped bass and birds of prey.
