Volunteer for Clean Water and a Healthy Watershed

The Merrimack River Watershed Council, Inc. (MRWC) needs your help to protect the health of the Merrimack River and its ecosystems. You may live, work or recreate in the watershed, but have you ever wondered:

• How clean is the water in the Merrimack River?
• Is it safe to swim in the river?
• Should I eat fish caught in the Merrimack River?
• Are there times when even boating on the river is dangerous to my health or that of my family?
• Is there a way I can help the environment while boating on the river?

The answer to the last question is a definitive YES, because MRWC needs volunteers to help collect the data necessary to answer the first four questions. By gathering some information while paddling or motor boating along the river, you can help safeguard the drinking water of the more than 300,000 people in the adjoining communities who depend on the Merrimack River for their water.

Merrimack River Water Quality Monitoring, Analyzing, Protecting and Promoting (MAPP) Program -

Once per month, May to October

The MAPP Program needs volunteers who own and operate boats and/or volunteers who are interested in taking water quality samples from boats or by wading. Water quality monitoring consists of traveling to 7 or 8 predetermined sites in one section of the Merrimack River and recording the information displayed on a water quality meter. A few teams will also collect water samples for bacteria analysis in the lab. Monitoring takes three to four hours each trip. Training is a three to four hour session in April or May on how to use the equipment. More information can be found on the MRWC website at http://www.merrimack.org/programs/mapp.html. Contact Tracie for information about MAPP training sessions.

Merrimack River Stream Team Volunteer –

Ongoing

Join the Merrimack River Stream Team to follow-up on the 2008 Shoreline Survey, a one-time visual and qualitative survey of the entire 50 mile length of the Merrimack River in Massachusetts which identified problems on the river needing attention and areas that need to be preserved. A report outlining survey findings and proposed action items is available on the MRWC website at: www.merrimack.org/publications/watershedreports.html

MRWC needs team leaders to coordinate various river clean-up and protection projects.

Volunteer for Clean Water and a Healthy Watershed

Ongoing

The Merrimack River Watershed Council, Inc. (MRWC) needs your help to protect the health of the Merrimack River and its ecosystems. MRWC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1976 by citizens and regional planning commissions to promote citizen involvement in the clean up of the Merrimack River. Its organizational mission today is to protect and promote the wise use of the Merrimack River Watershed. MRWC fulfills its mission through environmental monitoring, watershed education, community organizing and recreation. To fulfill this mission, MRWC needs definitive knowledge of water quality, of pollution sources and of options for polluter accountability and education. With nearly half a million people in Massachusetts alone dependent on the Merrimack for drinking water, the time and necessity to understand our water quality is now.
