“River Hero”

MRWC Nomination Wins National AwardRiverHero_Roger_Frymire-Christine_Tabak05-31-09.jpg

Roger Frymire of Cambridge, MA, an avid advocate for the rivers and streams in Massachusetts and New Hampshire was nominated by the Merrimack River Watershed Council (MRWC) as a “National River Hero”, an award by the River Network, a leading nationwide movement to preserve, restore, and protect clean and healthy waters. The award presentation was part of the festivities of the annual National River Rally - a 500+ participant conference of watershed conservationists and others working and volunteering for safe, clean water that took place in Baltimore May 29-June1st. MRWC Executive Director Christine Tabak participated in the conference and appropriately presented the “National River Hero” Award to Frymire.

Upon her return, Christine shared the following: "This was my first River Network Rally and I learned more in three days than I learned in 6 months on my own. The experience was truly enriching as I was able to learn from other river advocates, identify with their triumphs and commiserate with their struggles. The event culminated in the River Rally Banquet, where the River Hero award was presented to five river heroes selected from hundreds that were nominated from across the country. It was a pleasure to nominate Roger Frymire and share his success as he has certainly been an important part of MRWC success."  More news at web site

MRWC Awarded Grant

Environmental License Plates Pay Off  FW.jpg

The extra effort, time, and energy by Water Resource Manager Tracie Sales proved successful as the MRWC was recently awarded a Massachusetts Environmental Trust Grant. The grant (1 year award of $35,000) will fund the MRWC Merrimack River Impairment Quantification Project (code named "The IQ Project), a project designed to collect more detailed information on the pollutants in the river than we have been able to collect previously. Most of the funding for the Trust Grant comes from motorists who purchase "environmental license plates" in Massachusetts.

The MRWC also monitors the river’s water quality with support from the EPA, the Stevens Foundations, the Davis Conservation Foundation, the EnTrust Fund, and the Cabot Family Charitable Trust.

In Search of a Really Good Tee-Shirt

MRWC is looking for some great ideas, clever perspectives, good phrases, fabulous designs for a new tee-shirt. Your design can be inspired by the Merrimack River as an important natural resource in general, and specifically by the mission, purpose, and work of the MRWC. Also, your design should include the words “Safe, Clean Water.” Best not to have too many other words, though that’s not a hard and fast rule. Full Contest Guidelines on web site.

The Romans realized, as have every civilized people since, that living in cities is impossible if the water supply is not reliably clean and fresh.

 ...calling all hands!

cleanriverproject2_08.jpgJune is National Rivers Month! As school lets out and the days grow longer, millions of Americans head outdoors to swim, paddle, fish, and enjoy their local rivers. In Lowell, Clean River Project will organize their Merrimack River Cleanup and Scavenger Hunt on Sat., June 27 at the UMass Lowell Boathouse, Pawtucket Blvd. They are looking forward to another productive event and welcome volunteer/participants.

Last year MRWC staff members Tracie Sales and Christine Tabak (below, right) lent hand to help clean up the Merrimack.Tracie_Christine_rivercleanup08.jpg

Scavenger Hunt scoring is based on a point system that is based primarily on the size of the item taken out of the water. Scoring is also categorized by the size of your boat, keeping the important work and fun competition as fair as possible.

Prizes include trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Also prize packs with some great gifts from area restaurants and shops.
